Greenbank Church of Christ
Food Pantry
511 Greenbank Road, Wilmington, DE 19808

Our Origin Story

Two young people dreamed of feeding the hungry. For them, our member-stocked food closet to serve passersby wasn’t quite enough. So they decided to do more.

After painstaking research, training, set-up, and bulk food purchasing, the then-Cedars Food Pantry became a reality when our Thursday night pantry first opened in November 2012.

That first night, four people came to us for food. Four. Within just a few weeks, word spread. Members and clients handed out cards with our pantry hours and location. People told each other in apartment complexes, on the street, everywhere. Soon, the line began to form long before the pantry’s opening hour, wrapping around the building.

Now, about 80 households come to us every week, representing 150-200 or more people who receive enough food to feed their household three meals a day for three days.

We need an army of volunteers, who welcome clients, validate registration, fill orders, and direct traffic. It is a fun and exhausting time. We are so grateful for our volunteers, from within and outside our church, and the businesses and other contributors who partner with us to help hundreds every week.

All because two young people did more than dream of feeding hungry people. They did it.
